The Game

Return to Classic RPG Roots

Shadows of Erdrick is a browser-based online role-playing game built around exploration, turn-based battles, character growth, quests, equipment and a shared persistent world.

What kind of game is SOE?

SOE takes the readable, deliberate rhythm of classic console RPGs and places it inside an online world. You move through towns, wilderness and dungeons on a tile-based map, speak with NPCs, follow quests, fight turn-based battles and build a character over time.

The game is intentionally not an action MMO. Positioning in the world matters, but combat resolves through commands, abilities, spells, equipment and party decisions rather than twitch reflexes.

Exploration

Travel is a major part of the game. Towns contain services, characters and quest leads; the overworld connects regions; caves, towers, shrines, ships and other locations open as your adventure progresses.

Turn-Based Combat

Choose attacks, spells, skills and other actions while the game handles the round. Classes grow differently and later enemies expect you to use buffs, healing, status effects, equipment and party composition intelligently.

Progression & Equipment

Characters gain levels, stats, abilities and increasingly specialised equipment. Inventory, quest items and key items are separated so permanent adventure objects do not compete with ordinary carrying space.

Quests & Story

SOE contains town stories, regional quest lines and longer world-spanning progression. The journal is designed to keep track of discovered objectives without turning the game into a step-by-step spoiler list.

The continuing game

From BYOND to the Browser

For many current players, Shadows of Erdrick is not a new name. SOE lived for years on BYOND, where its long-running community explored the world, built characters and learned the classes, towns, quests and systems that defined the game.

The web edition is the continuation of that history rather than a disconnected replacement. Original FinalSOE and improved SOE material has been recovered, compared and rebuilt into a modern browser/server-authoritative runtime, while preserving familiar content and behaviour wherever practical.

Long-standing BYOND players should recognise names, routes, monsters, abilities and progression throughout Erdrick. Some interfaces and mechanics have deliberately been modernised for persistent online play, mobile support and server reliability.

Systems That Grow With Your Character

SOE is designed to unfold over time rather than present every system at once.

Pets & Companions

Capture, train and fight alongside companions. Active pets participate in battle and many party-support effects can include them.

Magic & Abilities

Spells and skills show clear player-facing descriptions, targets and costs. Class identity becomes more pronounced as new abilities unlock.

Runeweld Housing

Eligible players can own homes, furnish interiors, customise garden space and manage household residents and companion placements.

Multiplayer

Shared-world characters, chat, online presence, trading and party systems let players adventure alongside one another.

Travel

Roads, ports, vessels and special travel abilities connect the world. Returning to known towns and escaping dungeons become part of class utility.

Live Development

Player-facing patch notes, integrated reports and live administrative controls support ongoing testing without turning the game into a development console.
